Summary of Research Project: The Colombian government is becoming aware of the importance of the Asia Pacific and of improving trade and political linkages with countries in the region. As a result of this change in the trade orientation of the country, the Colombian government, private sector and academia have begun a process for designing and establishing a strategic policy towards the Asia Pacific. Some of the elements included in this strategy include more active participation in the economic cooperation mechanisms with the purpose of strengthening the political relations with the region. A second element region includes the negotiation of Free Trade Agreements and Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements with regional economies. In the context of the proposed approach, it is valuable to understand the Canadian experience with the Asia Pacific region. This research will look at Canada’s geostrategic importance as a country with a large Pacific coastline and a favourable position in international trade flows; the growth of Canada’s trade with the region and the effects of the potential Free Trade Agreements and Bilateral Investment agreements with the region; the institutional framework established at the governmental, private sector, and academic levels; Canada’s participation in multilateral forums such as APEC, PECC, and PBEC; and the role played by the large immigrant communities from Asian countries in Canada’s relation with the region.
